Your Beard-Care Routine

Practical answers for washing your beard and looking after the skin underneath.

Use a gentle cleanser that can clean both the beard hair and the skin underneath without leaving the skin feeling overly dry. Facial Fortress is a medicated 3-in-1 face, hair and beard wash that cleanses the beard and underlying skin while also containing 0.95% pyrithione zinc for dandruff and seborrheic dermatitis.

The formula also contains glycerin, panthenol, licorice root extract and apple fruit extract to help condition the skin and hair.

How often you wash your beard depends on your skin, beard, activity level, climate and the cleanser you use. Adjust your routine to remove sweat, dirt and product buildup while keeping your skin comfortable. If your skin feels tight or dry after washing, reassess your cleanser and routine.

For Facial Fortress, the medicated-use directions are at least twice a week for best results, or as directed by a doctor. That is separate from how often you may want to cleanse with a gentle nonmedicated wash.

  1. Wet your beard and the skin underneath thoroughly.
  2. Apply a small amount of cleanser and work it into a lather.
  3. Gently massage the cleanser through the beard and onto the underlying skin.
  4. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water.
  5. Gently pat the beard and skin dry with a clean towel.

You can use some shampoos on facial hair, but formulas designed primarily for scalp hair may not be ideal for everyone’s facial skin. If your skin is sensitive or prone to dryness, consider a gentle cleanser formulated for both hair and skin.
