Skincare Routine for Men: Face + Beard Essentials
Starting a skincare routine can feel like assembling IKEA furniture without the instructions: plenty of pieces, no clear idea where to begin. Cleansers, serums, eye creams, beard oils—does everything belong on your bathroom counter?
Start with a routine you can comfortably repeat. A few well-chosen products can take you from wondering what goes where to knowing exactly what to do each morning and evening.
A simple morning and evening routine
| When | What to do | Beard reminder |
|---|---|---|
| Morning | Gently cleanse, moisturize, and apply broad-spectrum SPF 30+ before going outdoors. | Work moisturizer through the hair to the skin. Protect exposed skin around your beard and beneath stubble. |
| Evening | Wash away the day’s buildup and apply moisturizer. | Rinse cleanser out thoroughly, including beneath the chin. |
| After heavy sweating | Gently wash and restore moisture as needed. Reapply sunscreen before returning outdoors. | Give sweaty skin beneath the beard attention, too. |
If you use a prescribed skin treatment, its application instructions also belong in your routine.
Step 1: Gently cleanse your face and beard
Choose a gentle cleanser that suits your skin. Washing should remove buildup without leaving your face feeling scrubbed raw.
- Wet your face and beard with lukewarm water.
- Massage cleanser gently with your fingertips, reaching the skin beneath your facial hair.
- Rinse thoroughly.
- Pat with a clean, soft towel, leaving skin slightly damp for moisturizer.
Wash your face morning and evening and after heavy sweating. Avoid repeated washing throughout the day or aggressive scrubbing. If cleansing leaves persistent tightness, burning, or peeling, reassess the product and your routine with your dermatologist. [1]
Can a minimalist routine use fewer products?
A cleanser labeled for the face, hair, and beard can combine cleansing jobs. It does not replace moisturizer, daytime sunscreen, or conditioner when your hair needs it. Keep a suitable wash and add products for a specific need.
For everyday cleansing, see how often to wash your beard. Medicated washing for dandruff follows the product label or your clinician’s plan. For help coordinating those schedules, see how often to wash your hair and beard to control dandruff.
Step 2: Moisturize your face and the skin beneath your beard
Apply moisturizer after washing, while your skin is still slightly damp. Cover the areas that feel dry rather than relying on a fixed pea-sized amount for every face and beard. [1]
Is cream better than lotion?
For dry or eczema-prone skin, a fragrance-free cream or ointment is generally preferred over lotion. These richer formulas help reduce moisture loss; ointments can be particularly helpful for very dry skin. [2]
Texture is a separate consideration. A cream can be formulated to feel comfortable and absorb readily; the word “cream” alone does not promise a less greasy finish than a lotion.
| Your skin | A useful starting point |
|---|---|
| Dry or eczema-prone | Fragrance-free cream or ointment; reapply to dry areas as needed. |
| Oily or acne-prone | An oil-free or noncomedogenic moisturizer you find comfortable. |
| Sensitive | A gentle, fragrance-free formula; avoid products that repeatedly sting or irritate. |
| Combination | Adjust the amount to each area, giving dry patches extra attention. |
Product selection should follow your skin’s needs. If flaking continues despite moisturizing, beard dandruff and dry skin can look similar.

How do you get moisturizer under a beard?
Work moisturizer through facial hair so it reaches the skin. For a fuller beard, part the hair in sections and use your fingertips to reach beneath the chin, too. [3]
Step 3: Protect exposed skin from the sun
Use broad-spectrum, water-resistant sunscreen with SPF 30 or higher before going outdoors. Apply it to dry skin about 15 minutes beforehand. Cover the face, ears, neck, and other exposed areas, including skin beneath sparse facial hair. Reapply at least every two hours outdoors and after swimming or sweating. A hat and shade add protection. [4], [5]
A moisturizer with adequate SPF can simplify your morning, provided you apply enough for proper sunscreen coverage. Stubble still needs sun protection. [3], [4]
Do you need beard oil, conditioner, or balm?
Beard oil is an option for normal-to-dry skin; beard conditioner is another option for acne-prone skin. If your skin is sensitive, choose a fragrance-free, noncomedogenic moisturizer. [3]
For eczema-prone skin, keep the cream-or-ointment recommendation above in mind. A fuller grooming shelf should not crowd out the moisturizer that works for your skin.

Is exfoliation an essential step?
No. Exfoliation is optional, and some skin does poorly with it. Physical scrubs remove surface cells through friction; chemical exfoliants use ingredients such as hydroxy acids. “Water-based” does not tell you whether a scrub is gentler or more suitable.
Gentle exfoliation may help some men who get ingrown hairs during the stubble phase. Whether it belongs in your routine depends on that need and how your skin tolerates it. [3]
Choose any exfoliation method and frequency carefully, especially if your skin is sensitive or you already use retinoids or benzoyl peroxide. Avoid exfoliating cuts or sunburn. Aggressive exfoliation can worsen irritation and dark marks. If you are unsure whether it would help, ask your dermatologist. [6]

Why the cleansing base matters
Surfactants are the ingredients that help oil and debris rinse away. For men managing face or beard dandruff, Facial Fortress pairs its medicated ingredient with a blend of mild, non-soap cleansing agents selected for sensitive facial skin. These include sodium lauroyl methyl isethionate, a surfactant used in gentle skin and hair cleansers. [8] The formula is also made without sodium lauryl sulfate (SLS) or sodium laureth sulfate (SLES). See the Facial Fortress cleansing ingredients and full formula.
For best results, its label recommends use at least twice weekly or as directed by a doctor: wet thoroughly, massage onto scalp and skin, and rinse. Continue the moisturizing and sun-protection steps that suit your skin.

Small grooming habits that help
Soften facial hair before shaving, use shaving cream or gel, and shave with the direction of growth. Avoid stretching the skin for an extra-close shave if you get razor bumps. Rinse your blade between strokes and replace it regularly. [4], [7]
Use a comb gently to arrange and detangle longer facial hair. Keep grooming tools clean. Take your time with tangles instead of pulling through them.
If a new product repeatedly stings or worsens redness, stop using it. Our guide to seborrheic dermatitis versus a beard-product reaction explains why the clues can overlap.
If a rash persists, worsens, or does not respond to your care, seek a diagnosis rather than continually adding products. Facial Fortress’s label also advises stopping use and consulting a doctor if the condition worsens or fails to improve with regular directed use. Drug Facts
